Baltimore’s Mayor Brandon Scott and Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Mitchell recently announced the launch of a paperless Water Billing program, and a new payment plan system, “PromisePay” for Baltimore City residents. To join the paperless water billing program, residents can simply visit the Department of Public Works’ online Customer Self-Service Portal, where they can create an account or log into an existing account to opt-in. Canada is planning on phasing out paper money and replacing it with all-plastic currency notes made out of a single thin sheet of polymer plastic material. Recently the country introduced the first of the polymer plastic notes which was the $100 bill. The Bank of Canada noted that the new bills contain leading-edge security features that make them difficult to counterfeit and easy to trace and track. The bank made a social media YouTube video post to detail the security features and to help Canadians ensure that they aren’t being duped by counterfeiters. Canada will introduce plastic $50 notes in March, and plastic $5 and $10 bills will come out by the end of 2013.

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton says it’s transitioning to become a “fully paperless organization” in the wake of an audit by Ontario’s privacy commissioner that found misdirected faxes and other privacy breaches at the hospital. The review underscores the risks fax machines have on personal health information and the need to replace them with more secure forms of communication technology noted Ontario privacy commissioner Patricia Kosseim. In light of all the new changes the hospital noted that “St. Joe’s has since implemented a ‘digital first, no fax’ policy, which means, wherever possible, paper is no longer fed into a fax machine to communicate information,”.
