The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) recently presented the conclusions of their initiative on the insurance industry switching to paperless delivery of insurance documentation. Attended by brokers, carriers, technology vendors, and industry associations. The IBAO “Going Paperless Initiative” analyzed the topic from many perspectives and included a first-of-its-kind consumer survey, gathering data on consumer preferences to help guide future decisions.
October 2022 Paperless Industry News Roundup Story #2: Electronic Trade Documents Bill Enters UK Parliament
The Electronic Trade Documents Bill will elevate digital trade documents to the same legal authority as their paper-based equivalents giving United Kingdom businesses more choices and flexibility in how they trade. The Bill will improve upon old legislation such as the Bills of Exchange Act 1882 and the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1992. If the Bill passes, the UK could be the first G7 country to pass this legislation and authorize the digitization of trade-related documents. The bill will also free up new digital trade corridors with Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore whose FTA’s contains provisions on e-invoicing, e-contracts, and new forms of e-signatures, and open avenues to work towards the interoperability of digital trade systems.
October 2022 Paperless Industry News Roundup Story #3: CAA North & East Ontario Magazine Goes Paperless
By going paperless, CAA North & East Ontario Magazine is reducing physical consumption by 48 million pieces of paper annually and will now publish new media content regularly rather than quarterly. The 108-year-old CAA Magazine has one of the highest circulations in Canada and will now feature a digital-only, interactive experience rather than printing physical copies for distribution. The CAA North & East Ontario is the first club in Canada to completely replace its hard copy version of the magazine title with a digital document format.

There have been social media rumors indicating that Walmart may be eliminating paper bags at their retail outlets but there seems to be confusion on current policies. While New Jersey, Vermont, and Maine are Walmart locations where paper bags are gone the company has no permanent plans to stop offering paper bags where they are legal. It is well known that the company has been exploring alternatives to single-use carryout bags since 2021 so it will be interesting to watch and see if they eventually do go completely paperless at store checkout stands.
